Good sleep includes waking up with ease and energy.

“Don’t worry about me, I sleep like a rock”.

Ok, but that’s only half the story (actually it doesn’t tell us much at all).  So commonly that rock is quite heavy and very tough to get rolling again.

A body in balance drifts off peacefully AND awakes rejuvenated.  Not one or the other. A resistance from the body to either fall asleep OR wake up should be considered equally red flags. Not just for what they tell us about our needs, but how they affect larger aspects of our life.

Most of the time, this is written off as being lazy or unmotivated.  Or we just blame ourselves for that 3rd episode of #GoT last night. Those annoying morning people reminds us how easy it is to “just get up”, but this can actually be a devastating circumstance that has a snowball impact on the success of our day (which accumulate to the success of our lives)

Let’s just say, spending the first 1-2 hours each day of your life in a dazed and lethargic fog (depressive), which, after several snooze hits, results in a rushed and frantic mindset (anxious), is not usually recommended by doctors, coaches, teachers, or authors. Anywhere.

I’m not implying that we should whip the blankets off and pop out of bed whistling dixie every morning. Although it’s nice, it’s not entirely realistic for humans stuck in our shoes.  But we need to maintain high goals. For most of us, our day lives and dies by the success of our morning.

A morning spent in these debilitating physical and mental states tends to result in an entire day that looks very similar at least.  A nice caffeine high might make us forget, but only until that alarm blares again tomorrow.

For 30 years, getting my feet to touch the floor in the morning was the most miserable and angering part of my day, every single day. I could describe it as torturous with only a slight exaggeration.

I gave up on it years ago, thought it was just “who I was” bc nothing ever helped or improved.  Just not a morning person. Truth be told, I was just too far out of balance.

Now I catch the sunrise several times a week, and it’s both a cause and effect of a balanced life. Never too late.
